Animal House Shelter is a non-profit, 501(c)3, no kill shelter for all breeds of dogs and cats.
Founded in June 2002, AHS takes in and cares for abused, neglected and abandoned animals — especially those scheduled for euthanasia at other shelters. Once rehabilitated and ready, they are carefully matched with prospective adopters and placed in loving homes. Over 20,000 pets have been adopted from Animal House Shelter.

Like people, animals have distinct personalities that make them unique. At Animal House Shelter, we are proud to say that the dogs and cats are treated like our own. We care enough to be certain they are treated with the comfort and respect that they deserve and we make every effort to ensure that they go to the right, forever, permanent, loving home.
The best possible veterinary care is always given to Animal House Shelter pets and treatment is never declined if it will give the animal a chance for a healthy life. Socializing and keeping our pets happy is also of utmost importance. Dogs are walked 4-5 times daily and cats are housed in a large, whimsical, free-roam habitat All are given loving care and attention by staff and volunteers.
We rescue all breeds of dogs including, but not limited to, the following breeds: Havanese, Shih Tzu, Poodle, Chihuahua, Yorkskire Terrier, Lhasa Apso, Boston Terrier, French Bulldog, Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie, German Shepherd, Boxer, American Bulldog, Bernese Mountain Dog, Weimaraner, Rottweiler, Am Staff Terrier, Great Pyrenees, Standard Poodle, Mastiff, Pug, Cavalier King Charles, Spaniel, Greyhound, Vizsla, American Eskimo, Pomeranian, Miniature Pinscher, Doberman, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, English Bulldog, Newfoundland, Coonhound, Mountain Cur, Bloodhound, Plott Hound, German Shorthair Pointer, Chinese Crested, Akita, Chow, Airedale, Alaskan Malamute, Basenji, Australian Shepherd, Cairn Terrier, Corgi, Collie, Spitz, Maltese, Papillon, Pekingese, Saint Bernard, Rhodesian Rideback, Labradoodle, Husky, Basset Hound, Beagle, Wheaten Terrier, Australian Shepherd, Schnauzer and Springer Spaniel. SWEET “BRUNO” THE 80 lb. AMERICAN BULL DOG MIX! Bruno was living in a car with his owner until she surrendered him because she knew she could no longer afford to buy food to feed him and he is very scared. All he has ever known is his companion and he feels abandoned and he does not understand why. He is a sweet boy who needs TLC to make him feel whole again and get his confidence back. Please consider fostering this boy..he needs some love. If you can not foster at this time, please donate towards his care while he is with AHS.

Rose is a 2 year old Lab/Hound that was found on the side of a dirt road in Southern Illinois barely alive because of starvation by an officer. They believe she was most likely dumped in the middle of the country road where she had no way of finding food and no shelter from the elements. She is arriving at AHS today, May 1st. She is so scared that she just curls up in the fetal position when you try and walk her so she has to be carried. She desperately needs a foster home with other dogs so she can learn that it is ok to be a dog once again and run and play outside. She was exposed for so long outside that she also became infected by heart worm by constantly being bit by mosquitos. AHS will take care of all of Rose’s medical needs but we need your help in sponsoring her. Please consider sponsoring or fostering Rose until she finds a loving family.

Shelter prepares for influx of abandoned pets
Definition of a No Kill shelter: “No adoptable animal should be euthanized if it can be adopted into a suitable home. Adoptable animals include only those animals eight weeks of age or older that, at or subsequent to the time the animal is impounded or otherwise taken into possession, have manifested no sign of a behavioral or temperamental defect that could pose a health or safety risk or otherwise make the animal unsuitable for placement as a pet, and have manifested no sign of disease, injury, or congenital or hereditary condition that adversely affects the health of the animal or that is likely to adversely affect the animal’s health in the future.”

In memory of Kiley…
KILEY’S STORY
In the summer of 1996, I received a frantic phone call from a friend that a dog had just been dumped out of a car on Lake Cook Rd and was dodging cars in the Barrington area. I was home during a break from college at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois, where I was an Animal Science major and planning to continue on to become a veterinarian.
The beautiful little girl that was scared to death and dodging cars was a 6 month old female American Staffordshire Terrier, who we soon named Kiley. I had grown up with a family filled with rescue dogs, horses, cats and even wildlife that we rehabilitated from time to time. I had never had anyone as special as Kiley come into my life. She returned to college with me as I continued my last year and she quickly opened my eyes to what I needed to do with my passion for animals.
I needed to open a non-profit, no kill animal shelter for all breeds of dogs and cats. Animal House Shelter was established in June of 2002.
When we began our mission, Kiley helped us in so many ways. Because her temperament was so amazing, she was a natural to help us determine if an animal was dog-friendly. She also mothered several orphaned puppies throughout the years.
She was and always will be my source of inspiration for Animal House Shelter, Inc. She inspired our organization to carry out our mission to save from euthanasia homeless dogs and cats from pounds and animal control facilities.
I lost Kiley to adrenal cancer in 2008. Because she was such a special soul that impacted my life in ways I can not fully explain, AHS has now rescued, rehabilitated and found forever homes for over 15,000 dogs and cats to date.
