How to make a difference in an animals life by volunteering...

The animals and Animal House Shelter are always in need of your help! If you can afford one hour of your time, you could make a large difference in the life of an animal.

We offer a new volunteer orientation the third Saturday of every month at 5pm (excluding holidays).  We ask that all new volunteers attend a volunteer orientation. You may bring your completed AHS volunteer application at the time of orientation. You must have a completed application on file at the shelter prior to any volunteer work. As long as you are 16 or older (no exceptions please) you are welcome to come to the shelter any time between the hours of 11am-7pm all days of the week to volunteer.  You will need to have a waiver signed by a parent if you are under the age of eighteen.  Please contact the shelter for a new volunteer application and waiver if applicable. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times (If you are interested in Community service hours please contact the shelter for more details).

Feel free to plan on staying the day, if you would like! Just be sure to bring a lunch or snack and also remember that working with animals can be dirty, so dress accordingly and also dress appropriately for the weather.

There is nothing more you need to do to volunteer, it is that simple!  Just come on in and we'll handle the rest.

Listed below are just a few things that volunteers can do at the shelter :

  • Walk and socialize with the dogs
  • Bathe/groom dogs
  • Spend quality one-on-one time with the animals to help socialize them and teach them tricks!     (puppies, kittens & cats too)
  • Spend time in the 'Free Roam' Cat Room to socialize, help groom or otherwise, just help to make their lives more comfortable during their stay here

More Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Help with fundraising events--look on our Upcoming Events page and just give us a call or email if you can help at any of the scheduled events
  • Share ideas on fundraising and special donation drives
  • Create advertising material to help get the shelter recognized within a larger community radius
  • Help pass out newsletters , brochures and donation cans around your community to get the animals more exposure.  (You can stop by the shelter and pick them up anytime)
  • Volunteer for Off-site Adoption Events (you can call the shelter for more information on adoption events)
  •  Gather bedding, cleaning supplies and other items from our 'wish list' in your community, for the animals and shelter
  •  Hold a drive at your school or in your community for things listed on our 'wish list'
  • Are you not able to adopt at this time? Consider offering one of the most rewarding things ever!  A chance at life... Become a Licensed Foster Home today! Foster Care enables us to rescue animals that may have otherwise been euthanized due to their age, injury or health status. Animals in need of foster care often include Pregnant/nursing animals, animals recovering from surgery/injuries or dogs undergoing heartworm treatment.

  • Anything else you can think of?  We are willing to work with you and any ideas you have!  Come join our committees of dedicated volunteers who strive to make a difference in our community

VOLUNTEER RULES

Thanks for volunteering at Animal House Shelter!  Your help during our volunteer hours is greatly appreciated.  To help make your volunteer time efficient and safe we ask that you follow the rules listed below.  Also understand that if these rules are not followed, your volunteering privileges may be revoked.  These rules are designed with your safety, as well as the safety of all other people and animals in mind.  Thanks again for the generous donation of your time.

  1. When walking dogs you must stay at least ten feet away from any other dogs being walked. Not all dogs are friendly toward one another and by keeping this safe distance you can avoid potentially dangerous interaction between them.

  2. Never enter an area of the building other than the lobby area unless you are escorted by a staff member.  The dogs are not used to unfamiliar people walking through the shelter and become very stressed and agitated when this happens. For their well being and comfort we do not allow non-staff members in the areas of the building where the dogs are kept.

  3. Never put any body parts into the animal’s cages or outdoor runs/ fences.

  4. Keep the dogs ten feet away from the fence to the right of the building.  There will be dogs in that area loose from time to time that will become agitated if the dog you are walking is to close to the fence.

  5. Volunteer hours are from 11 AM to 7 PM seven days a week.  You may stop in any time during these hours and stay as long as you like.  There is no need to call ahead. Volunteer help is greatly needed in the cat room. If you are able to volunteer in the mornings for this (approx 9 am), please schedule with the staff.

  6. Proper footwear is required.  No sandals or high healed shoes.  Your entire foot must be covered.

  7. Do not bring valuables with you when volunteering.  We do not have the capability of keeping your personal belongings safe.  Any property lost or stolen while volunteering at Animal House Shelter is not our responsibility.

  8. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.  Anyone under the age of 18 needs to have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian before they will be allowed to volunteer. All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No children under the age of 16 are allowed to walk dogs (An adult must hold the leash)

  9. You are required to pick up after the dogs you are walking when they defecate. A staff member will supply you with plastic bags to use which you can then throw into the dumpster, or you may bring your plastic grocery bags form home!

  10. Hours for volunteers are flexible; however we request that you are consistent in volunteering the times that you have scheduled. We request that attend any scheduled volunteer orientation, prior to being an official AHS volunteer.
